Thanks Farkel!
The Gruss/Cretien book is an eye opener.
What about the rumor that old Joe's bones may be somewhere out in San Diego to this day, buried secretly at Beth-Sarim per his orders?
at 4440 braeburn road, san diego, ca., in the rich and prestigious neighborhood of the kensington heights neighborhood sits one of the biggest embarrassments in the long and continuing list of embarrassments the watchtower society has created for itself.. most dubs know nothing about it, and if it wasnt for a few brief comments about it in the proclaimers book in 1993, even fewer dubs would know anything at all about it.. it is the home once known as beth-sarim (pronounced beth-sareeeem), the house of the princes.. it is a house with a history the society has shown by its historical lack of candor, hopes everyone would forget.
in fact, the society has done just about everything it could do to ensure that its history will be forgotten.
in the first book devoted to discussing the history of jehovahs witnesses, this house and its history is not even mentioned.
Thanks Farkel!

i do have two new return visits but they are not from field service.. my womens club went to a local nursing home today.
we brought the elderly gifts, we sang songs with them, and we brought our pets, and listened to them.
they were so happy to see us and share some of their lifes experiences with us.. it was different to go to a nursing home with no ulterior motives like pushing jw literature.. it felt right to just give them what they wanted most.
You're a sweetheart!
the posts in the elders meeting thread got me thinking about this, so i've spun it off for into another thread.. were you ever 'counseled' because "some" in the congregation were disturbed by things you said/did/listened to/watched?.
here is just some of the stupid stuff that the elders brought me in on.
though they were usually handled through shepherding calls, not in the back room at the kh.. 1: because i decided to change my first and middle names.
It occurs to me that there is -surprise! surprise! - a double standard in the way the judicial committees handle sexual offenses.
In my congregation back in NY there was a fellow who had a reputation as a real italian stallion - he would get disfellowshipped and reinstated every year or so. There were comments about how he was SO virile and all, he couldn't help himself. I'm sure he provided the elders with the sort of vicarious thrill they wanted, so they cut him slack, and invited him back for more true tales of conquest from time to time.
i can't belive it's been a whole year!!!!.
last year on oct 3rd, i was at home with my parents eating dinner.
we of course were not at the meeting .
Happy anniversary to you,
Happy anniversary to you,
Happy anniversary Dear Venice and expatbrit,
Happy anniversary to you!
Congratulations on discovering TRUTH and FREEDOM!
I would never have guessed that you and expatbrit have been out only a year.

What a walk down memory lane!
I recall the 60's 'ban' on chess. Farkel told it true; it "glorified war."
There was a brother in our circuit who knew a lot about weight lifting, an older guy, a mature solidly built man whose "buffitude" was fading, but he would only share his information with the Bethelites who were living at the Assembly Hall (if they were interested) I recall one guy who bulked up at what then seemed to be a phenomenal rate, and I have no doubt he did it without steroids. But if you were a teenage publisher and you expressed an interest - he had no time to talk.
I was an obediant idiot and tried to stay inside the lines - maybe being raised with no Dad and being subject to beatings from my theocratic mom who told me how my birth ruined her life made me malleable, or maybe I've got "loser" wiring in my head - I digress...
I was once advised that my sideburns were one-eighth of an inch too long.
Back in the early 70's, long, floor length skirts were fahionable with the young sisters, no doubt because they covered all that could be covered, but the Fashion Police had to find something to complain about... so after one meeting the cong. overseerer engages me in a conversation and asks what I think about the way the assistant cong overseer's daughter was dressed - she was maybe sixteen and quite pretty, and was wearing one of these long dresses - the overseer wanted to get *me* to complain so he could use me as an excuse to criticise the young girl. I disappointed him by telling him I didn't have any problems with the dress. The truth was that I hated those sacky, bag-like dreses because they didn't look good on anyone who wore them. Now that I think about it, maybe *I* was being tested to see if I was stupid enough to say something like "not enough leg showing, sir!"
just a bit of background first: my pal ray works as a barman in a nearby village social club.
sometimes he enjoys a pint in my pub, and sometimes talks with my estranged pal, dub-in-the-pub.
some years ago he married lucy, a vivacious middle-aged lady with something of a reputation.
I agree, Ray should dump Lucy. As part of his divorce settlement, he should get the house.
blondies informative post under the "peaceful muslims" thread prompts me to ask - i recall hearing some time ago that the basic teachings of the black muslims were formulated by some former jw, that the koran was not the basis for the black muslim faith... .
can anyone shed some light on this?

how much time do you think Canadians would have to spend at sea on slave boats on their voyage to America?
as a witness what occupation did/do you hold?.
i was speaking with a friend of mine that is a former witness and we remarked about how many of us have worked in some sort of janitorial work.

i have been considering taking some self defense training for some time and with recent events this has moved up on my priority scale.. any suggestions on which type of martial arts would be best for a complete beginner.
i have never been in a fight in my life, have always talked my way out of trouble in the past.
but think its time to prepare myself for more.. thanks.
I agree with the comments about looking into handgun training.
As far as empty hands self defense, I'm like to suggest that if you are interested in REAL self defense instead of the forms that are taught in traditional schools, you should investigate a couple of alternatives.
The first would be boxing, where you find out what it's like to take a hit very early in your training.
Go to About.com and look up the "SCARS Institute" and "Krav Maga". Also look into Philipine Escrima/Arnis and "non-traditional" Jeet Kune Do. Do a search on "Charles Nelson Self Defense" and think about getting some of the videos. Search on "Bulldog Jeet Kune Do" for a VERY non-traditional style that gives you tools you can effectively apply with brief practice.
All the other arts mentioned are dffective for street defense after years of practice. As impressive as the octagon is - and Brazilian JuJitsu RULES there because of tremendous grappling skill the Gracie family has developed - there is also the fact that these are not no holds barred street fights, they are a couple of notches above pro wrestling.
Whatever you decide, rule #1 is: NEVER fight fair!
